OUR SHORT VERDICT

The RX 9070 XT can deliver a useful native-raster gain over the RX 7800 XT, but both have 16GB VRAM. If the older GPU already meets your FPS targets, the October 2026 market makes waiting quite defensible.

Similar 16GB VRAM, different performance and features.

Who should buy, and who should wait?

The RX 9070 XT can deliver a useful native-raster gain over the RX 7800 XT, but both have 16GB VRAM. If the older GPU already meets your FPS targets, the October 2026 market makes waiting quite defensible.

The memory number stays the same

A 7800 XT owner already has 16GB of VRAM, which helps it remain attractive in games that stress memory capacity. The 9070 XT’s advantage comes from newer GPU architecture, throughput and improved ray-tracing features rather than doubling capacity.

Why 4K might change the equation

High-detail 4K gaming benefits from the RX 9070 XT’s extra raster horsepower, though individual titles can still need upscaling or settings changes. For 1440p esports and mainstream games, your 7800 XT might be ample.

Factor in resale and power

Compare the net upgrade cost after selling the older card with the improvement you expect. Account for the 9070 XT’s board-specific power supply recommendation, connectors and case clearance. Shop different board partners rather than assuming one GPU model equals one size.

The honest reason to skip: If you are enjoying your games at the monitor refresh rate already, the 7800 XT remains useful and does not need replacing on a schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Does a higher average FPS guarantee it in every game?

No. Different games weight shader performance, VRAM, ray tracing and upscaling very differently. These figures use the same June 2026 raster benchmark suite at Ultra settings. Look up your most-played games separately.

Can I install either card in my existing computer?

Often, but do not assume it. Board-partner dimensions, motherboard slot clearance, front radiator position, PCIe power cables and PSU health all matter. Use our GPU fit guide and the actual manufacturer's spec sheet.

Should I wait for prices to fall?

Waiting is a rational option when your current GPU handles your games and contemporary store prices are high. Set a personal price ceiling based on how much performance improvement you actually need.
