Who should buy, and who should wait?
For an RTX 3070 owner playing demanding 1440p games, the RX 9070 offers a meaningful jump in native raster performance plus 16GB instead of 8GB. Unlike a minor generation swap, this can change which presets make sense.
Why the 3070 is showing its age in some games
The RTX 3070’s GPU remains capable, especially in older and esports titles, but its 8GB VRAM is increasingly constraining at higher texture settings in selected new releases. The Radeon’s larger memory pool can reduce those constraints, although game-to-game results vary considerably.
1440p is the sweet spot for this comparison
The RX 9070 performs especially well in native 1440p raster testing. It is not a universal RT winner: Nvidia technologies such as DLSS, ray reconstruction, and CUDA remain relevant if they are central to your setup. Look at your actual favorite game’s ray-traced performance before switching brands.
Account for the whole PC
You may need to re-check the GPU’s physical dimensions, power supply, and existing airflow. If you play 1080p esports on an older processor, you may run into CPU limits before enjoying the full GPU uplift. Those constraints do not show up in a single GPU FPS chart.

Frequently asked questions
Does a higher average FPS guarantee it in every game?
No. Different games weight shader performance, VRAM, ray tracing and upscaling very differently. These figures use the same June 2026 raster benchmark suite at Ultra settings. Look up your most-played games separately.
Can I install either card in my existing computer?
Often, but do not assume it. Board-partner dimensions, motherboard slot clearance, front radiator position, PCIe power cables and PSU health all matter. Use our GPU fit guide and the actual manufacturer's spec sheet.
Should I wait for prices to fall?
Waiting is a rational option when your current GPU handles your games and contemporary store prices are high. Set a personal price ceiling based on how much performance improvement you actually need.
